Closing up the year....Bringing in the NEW!!!!

Geez, where did this year go? I can't believe that we're saying sianara to the year 2011 and hello to 2012!  I seriously felt like time flew by in a blink of an eye and we're just about to celebrate and welcome a brand new year. WOW! All I can say is "What a year!" As I sit here in front of my computer, I can't help but reflect back to how far I have come and grown. From finishing up my last year in college to giving birth and now a mother! These are my top 5 moments I'm most proud of for the year 2011:

1. The Birth of my Baby Eden

I can't believe how much Eden has changed my life. She has opened my eyes to the wonders of life. Before I had her, I felt as if my world was in black & white. I was so sure of everything and had all the answers. When she came into this world, she brought the color back into the television set. As cheesy as it may sound, she reminds me of the scene in "The Wizard of Oz" where Dorothy is at that magical land over the rainbow. The place that is illuminating with beautiful color and you know you're in a good place. Since having her, I realized that maybe I don't have the answers to everything and you begin to realize how vulnerable you really are. It's been such a learning experience and motherhood takes you to places where you are greatly challenged and tested. I've realized that I have to trust my intuition to come out strong and do what's best for me and my baby because that's what I live for.

2. Graduating UCLA

I did this for me, not my parents; though they would have been proud either way! The day I walked at graduation was one of the best days of my life. Pregnant and wobbling on end, it was such a personal accomplishment to be able to say that I was able to finish in 4 years. It was an emotional roller coaster and life changing. I learned so much about myself academically and how far I could push myself. As gruesome as it was, it was well worth the investment. I made life-long friends that I would die for and amazing professors that changed my perception on a lot of issues. I'm not done yet though. I have many more years of studying!

3. Let the hair be gone! Locks of Love!

This was by far one of the most significant event I got to be a part of. I donated my hair before in high school but this time it was a special for me. I had the opportunity to meet a cancer patient at the hospital prior to cutting my hair and she allowed me into her life. I will never forget the moment that I got to talk to her and how she trusted me. I felt the bond and the energy she was radiating to me. I learned that she was undergoing chemotherapy and she expressed to me how afraid she was of leaving her family. At 30 years of age, she had everything to lose if God told her it was time. She wasn't going to see her kids graduate or get married. It broke my heart. Though I didn't realize the magnitude of what she meant at that time, I know now. She taught me how valuable life truly is and to live every moment to its fullest.

4. Landing my first REAL job post-college Ca-Ching!!!

Makin' the benjamins, BABY! I never knew how good it feels to earn a "valued" dollar. All the hard work you put in and earning the money in the end makes it so worthwhile. I appreciate it so much more now that I realized how much everything cost (caring for the baby). It definitely adds up and gets expensive. Being able to work and provide for myself and my baby is by far the most rewarding. I've become so independent; something I was afraid I would never be able to do. Being on my own has really showed me what I'm really capable of doing and has pushed me beyond my own limitations. I am Eden's sole provider now and I can't let her down. She deserves the best in life and I'm going to give it to her! On the plus side, I absolutely love my job! My job allows me to travel, to build relationships with physicians/nurses, and help others. I'm getting paid to do what I love. Nothing gets better than that!

5. Nursing for 6 months and STILL GOING!!!!

I can't believe I've made it to my initial goal of 6 months! This is by far something that I will always remember  in the year 2011 and on. It takes serious dedication and a lot of sacrifices to be able to keep nursing. There were so many times I wanted to quit and I've asked myself, "Is it even worth it?" For instance, you're exhausted at work and have a break, what do breastfeeding mothers do, you pump. Middle of the night, you wake up to pump or keeping track by labeling your bottles. It's a lot of work! To tell you the truth, I could have easily quit 2 weeks in because I was getting frustrated and didn't have the support to keep breastfeeding. I see how easy it is to mix formula in water and I yearned for the "easy" button. However, I kept at it and had to remind myself what it is I wanted to achieve. I wanted my baby to be healthy. Since breastmilk contains the antibodies and complete nutrients that allows her to grow strong, I wanted her to get the best. Most importantly, it's the mother-daughter bond that really pushed me to keep at it. At one point in my life, I could tell you how milk letdown works backwards and forward but it's been a while. Any of my PhySci peeps want to give it a try? LOL Essentially, I knew the benefits of breastfeeding outweighs all the hardships. It raises IQ, protect from diseases such as asthma, diabetes, and obesity and keeps mommy healthy as well. I'm going for the whole 12 yards and I've been gun-ho about doing so. Its been one of the greatest accomplishments I have achieve and I know I can do it! At the end of the day, I think of my baby girl and what she deserves to get me through it.

I urge you to reflect back because it does prepare you as to what you want to achieve in the New Year. What are your greatest accomplishments in the year 2011?

Christmas with the Family

I absolutely love Christmas because it's the best time of the year! I will be the first to tell  you that I am one of those crazy people blasting Christmas music while driving and making sure my Pandora station is set on Michael Buble Christmas. It just sets me in the mood for the holiday.

To sum up my Christmas weekend, it was simply AMAZING! I was able to make it down to Southern California to visit my family and enjoy the beautiful weather...definitely not a white Christmas in LA but that's ok! This was Eden's first Christmas and she loved every moment of it. She got to visit her dad's side of the family for a couple days and spent Christmas with my family. One of the coolest thing I got to do was learn how to make tamales. I've always wanted to learn but found no one to teach me. Thank God for my cousin's mother-in-law who was willing to teach us and among the three of us, we probably made about 8 dozen. To be perfectly honest,  I can eat tamales every morning for breakfast because it's so DAMN GOOD! The tamales that we made tasted like Christmas in your mouth. It was so moist and the pork just danced and then took a dive on your tongue. YUMMY and TASTY! Lesson learned: you need an army to make tamales! Although tiresome...but well worth the sweat and grind.

This year, my dad held the Christmas party at his house. Originally it was just going to be him and a few other family members (i.e. close aunts and uncles) but it turned out to be the event of the season. Let me explain why! Now that my cousins and I are a lot older and we have gone through major life event (i.e. marriage, babies!, school, etc) it's so difficult for all of us to get together and hang out like the old times...you know... the great childhood years. This year was different. Somehow it took a phone call from cousin to cousin to get everyone together and we even carpooled down to my dad's to get there. My dad was surprised that we even showed up because he understood that we have our own life now. I knew that this was something that I didn't want to miss; the opportunity for my dad to see his first granddaughter and to be able to spend quality time with the family. That's what life should be all about.

What I learned most from this Christmas weekend was just how amazing family can be. I know I take my family for granted but when you do take the time to step back and analyze, you realize that in the end that's who will stick with you for life. This Christmas, I'm thankful for my family and cousins (plus the ones that are married into the family and the ones that will soon be) for the support and love that they have given to me and my baby girl. We basically lived our childhood years that night playing board games and reminiscing on old times... and of course, Eden was the star of the night!

'Tis the Season...

'Tis the season to be dressing up for the holiday. I absolutely love Eden in cute dresses and she doesn't seem to mind getting into them. Last week, I had Eden's Christmas pictures taken at Sears in a lovely black/red velvet dress that I got from Kohls. I had to get shiny, red, Dorothy shoes to go with it. She loved it! It was difficult to get her to smile during the actual photo shoot because her mind was on playing with the toys in the lobby but I can't wait to pick them up this week.

Yesterday, we attended a 50's event and I was so happy that I found this pink and grey polka dot dress in her closet that was so appropriate for the 50's theme. Style it with a big, pink bow headband and you got yourself an outfit. She looks darling!

That's a face of amazement! I can't get over that face!
Eden is a big girl now. She's sitting in a high chair!

Eden's First Spoonful!

I've been looking forward to this stage in Eden's life where I get to feed her her first spoonful of rice cereal. It's so surreal that time just flew by and now I'm introducing solids to her. Thanksgiving weekend: Saturday I believe, I sat Eden in the high chair. She sat patiently while I prepared her meal dabbling and playing with the toys I placed in front of her.

PREPARATION-The crazy mom that I am, I laid all my materials out beforehand. I made sure the breastmilk was warm enough to stir in the cereal. I also made sure it was stirred very well so that the texture was right. Not too liquidy and not too mushy.

FEEDING-This girl was very eager. Her eyes just lit up when I was preparing it. She was jumping up and down in her seat with excitement thinking, "What does mama have in her hands?" As I scooped a mouthful of rice cereal on to the spoon, I gave a quick blow to make sure it wasn't too hot. I got it into her mouth and she kind of let it sit in there for a good while....FIVE SECONDS LATER....she made the face all mothers would break down from...the pre-crying face, you know the face...that "give her a second and she'll be in tears" face! Eden was probably thinking, "Ma, what is this? I don't like this!" Before I knew it, she spit it back up and onto her bib. I gave it a couple more tries but that mouth of hers would not swallow. I called it quits. My mom step in to force feed her because I just couldn't do it. With the experience my mom has, she just pushed the cereal back in after she tried to spit it out. Eden ate it in the end.

I'm so happy that I got to give her the first spoon because it will always be something that I remember. It's so special and it signifies so much more. It's a sign that she's ready for real food. My baby girl is growing so fast and with that, she'll be having many more spoonfuls.

Extreme Couponing: Weekend Haul

I have been collecting coupons for the past 2 Sundays and pretty much been researching to prepare for the hauls I'm about to show you. Now it's time to put what I learned in action. I performed some extreme couponing at the following major drugstores: Walgreens and CVS as well as at the mega superstores: Target and Walmart. I felt pretty good with the outcome of this weekend haul.

Target & Walmart: I spent $17 for about $60 worth of stuff.
Highlight: Palmer's Cocoa Butter for $0.27-originally $2.27 & Transformers action figure for $1.99- originally $7.99, Oral B Rechargeable Toothbrush for $2.82 -originally $12.82

CVS Haul: I spent $8.15 for about $35 dollars worth of stuff.
Highlight: Getting the Glade products for $0.66 a piece. The pumkin carving tool & candy was FREE. Also the Halloween candy bag was what Baby Eden collected for FREE!

Walgreens Haul: Hands down, my favorite haul! I spent $2.38 for $35 dollars worth of stuff.
Highlight: TheraMax Nasal Spray was FREE , Huggies Wipes was$2.49, Welchs Grape Jelly was $0.75 each. The coupons and register rewards brought down my out-of-pocket cost.

*I'll break down this haul in my next post.

I was so happy that I did well using coupons to buy groceries and household products for the my first time. I still consider myself a beginner. I'll get better as time progress. Extreme couponing is seriously addicting and it only takes one great transaction to get you hooked!

Extreme Couponing 101: Cutting Back Tips

I recently got into couponing I'd say after my 22nd birthday when I was getting all these cool freebies. I thought to myself, "Why not move into couponing and see what else I can get for free or discounted." LOL. No, I'm kidding! I think mainly it was a bit of desperation when I realized that I didn't have any income coming in and knew I wasn't able to live off my own savings I had for a rainy day. I had to make numerous changes in the way I spend now that I have a daughter. Some cutbacks/changes I made:

1.) Eating out less often:

I would say Jonathan and I probably eat out once a month if that.  But even if we do eat out, I always have a coupon for the restaurant.  For instance, yesterday we went out to BJ's to enjoy a FREE Pizookie right after having dinner at home. Cooking home meals are a huge money saver!

2.) Traveling long distance less often:

Sort of. We recently went to Riverside this past weekend to visit my cousin's which was a rare weekend getaway. But during the week, we don't travel around town that often. Instead we walk to the park that is about a mile away and have Eden play there. What's awesome is that I live 5 minutes walking distance from CVS and the library. You'll always see me walking Eden to those places everyday. It's good exercise!

3.) Being frugal in spending:

I used to be able to buy new outfits for Thursday nights and all kinds of stuff back in the days. Now that I have Eden; has that all changed! I prioritize what's important including how I spend my money. As cliche as it sounds, "money doesn't grow on trees" (I wish bc then you'll see me outside tending to it everyday..lol...j/k) you have to work damn hard for it! I much rather save for Eden's College Funds or on the things she needs rather than myself.

4.) Collecting cans

You're probably thinking, "She's kidding, right? She doesn'treally do that!" Actually I'm do. You can earn a lot of money just collecting cans. I've even asked a homeless guy that comes around my neighborhood one time how much he makes collecting cans and he said he earns $40-50/day (un-taxed of course). I was like "Wow! That's a lot. Good job!" I mainly collect cans when I'm walking Eden to the park on my way there and back. I always run into about 15 cans/bottles everyday. I just throw them under the stroller basket area. First of all, I hate when people litter because it just makes the park look ugly and I think somewhere along my life, UCLA drilled that CORE 4 value of saving the environment! Recycle people!

*Check back tomorrow because I'll post some pictures of my hauls!*

It's The Big Four Months Baby!

What's up with Baby Eden, you might say? She's four months today and she's changing before my eyes. She is just darling. She is just full of life! Eden lights up the room with her presence. I always say it's because she has a "twinkle" in her eyes. I thought I share what she's been up to leading up to the four month mark...

1. She stands up with assistance and eager to take steps. Also, when she's in her walker, she tends to push herself backwards only. Haven't been able to push herself forward just yet.
2. Her hands are always in her month. I don't know if she's teething or just wanting to suck her hand. I have to pull her hand out of her mouth. I'm a germaphobe and seeing the things that she touches go into her mouth freaks me out a bit. lol
3. Eden smiles when you smile! I absolutely love it. I think it's the absolute cutest thing when babies smile. They're literally all gums!!!
4. She laughs super loud when you tickle her on her chest.
5. She doesn't get fussy when held. I think it's on account of being surround by so many people. My mom's house is literally a train station.
6. Her motor skills are definitely intact. She's grabbing everything in sight.
7. She's super observant especially when we go outside and visit the garden. She loves vivid colors!
8. Eden can hang on to your fingers while standing. She prefers standing over sitting. (Just like her mama!)
9. I've been reading her the same book "Guess How Much I Love You" by Sam McBratney over again and she's beginning to recognize the pictures and repetition.
10. She still wakes up at 4:30AM regardless of the time I put her to sleep.

She's gone a long way and I can honestly say that time flies by so quickly. If you don't cherish it at the moment, it'll all be gone. I wish I can keep her this small forever. She's so much fun. I'm already seeing that she's testing me and seeing how far she can push my buttons. Can you believe that? At four months, this beautiful lovebug is seeing if she can get away with little things.

God bless my little Edenbug!

Eden's Spooktacular Weekend

This past weekend we headed down to Riverside to visit the cousins (Eden's aunties and uncles) and we just had a blast. It was a weekend getaway from Fresno and I was in much need of it. The drive to SoCal was difficult with Eden because we had to make many pit stops. Pit stops included diaper change, feeding stop, plain fussiness, etc. You never know what kind of day she's going to have but we made the best of it.

The weekend was filled with GOOD FOOD! When I say GOOD, I mean GOOD!!! Carne asada, chicken, shrimp tacos, rice, beans, you name it. I have to admit it was a million times better than the taco man. It was a family feast where we all helped to prepare the food and bask in each other's company. My cousins and I had way too much to catch up on and it was great because they got to see Baby Eden again. Eden had a great time and was on her best behavior which I didn't think she would be especially since she's in a new environment. She's definitely recognizing faces and didn't even fuss when she's in the hands of people other than her mama. I like that she was so great with everyone. We have to do more of these weekend getaways!

I <3 Carne Asada! So good when it's grilled! Thank you Grill Master Jonathan & Gabe!

Chopping up the cilantro, onions, and lime. Had to take a picture of it.

Final product! It makes my mouth watery just looking at it. :)

My pride and enjoy! She makes me soo happy. I'd go the distance for this kid!

The girls are in the kitchen cooking and catching up on all the latest news. I think we were talking about the Kardashian wedding...ya know, the important stuff in life...lol

The boys were shooting zombies and chillin'!

They are way too competitive and super into the game.

Baby Eden and Auntie Ruthie. Eden was a little ladybug for the Family Halloween Party.

Getting kisses from her Tia Loca.

 Eden and her Auntie Thaoie!!!

Look at those chunky legs. I love my little girl!

*Photo Credits to you Thaoie! I stole some from Fbook. Thanks!
